A pond environment The Cornerstone Environmental Conservancy was formed as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Its purpose is to acquire and maintain ecologically significant undeveloped lands, such as swamps, marshes and other wetlands. Alternatively, the Corporation will acquire and maintain conservation easements as defined by Section 49-0303(1) of the Environmental Conservation Law of New York State and Section 170(h)(1) of the Internal Revenue Code. The organization will acquire land either as the recipient of charitable gifts or as the recipient of bequests.

Some tracts of wetlands or undeveloped land will be held and preserved by the Corporation until arrangements can be made to transfer title to the land to a government conservation agency. The Corporation may sell such undeveloped lands to municipalities which allot tax-generated funds and state or federal grants to acquire land or development rights to preserve greenspace and wildness areas. The Corporation is supported and receives most of its funding from the general public.

The establishment, use, operation and maintenance of the wetlands help offset any negative environmental impact to waters of the United States and the State of New York, including but not limited to, wetlands within the Black Creek Watershed, and northern portions of the Genesee River Watershed (Monroe, Genesee and Livingston Counties). See Rev. Rul 76-204, 1976-1 C.B.152.

The Corporation intends that most of its financial support comes from the general public. Occasionally, financial support may come from municipalities which allot funds to purchase environmentally sensitive land. The Corporation might participate in sales to such municipalities to recover its cost and to utilize the proceeds to acquire more ecologically significant land.

The Environmental Conservancy received its first donation in the form of a Conservation Easement in late 2000. The Easement was granted on a wetland complex which was in excess of 100 acres. For further information, contact Cornerstone Environmental Conservancy at (585) 424-1400.
